Suffolk Park Residential Aged Care

This proposal is for the allocation of 80 residential care places for Suffolk Park, located in Byron Shire, offering a relaxing and naturally beautiful environment.  These places are for a new high care and low care residential aged care facility to be known as Suffolk Park Residential Aged Care.

Service analysis of the Far North Coast has indicated rapid growth of the ageing population and a lack of residential aged care services. Many older people are having to travel long distances to access existing services within the Byron Shire. We have identified 5 service gaps. Accordingly, we have proposed a service catering for:

  • 20 places within a secure dementia-specific unit,
  • 3 places for older people from rural and remote areas,
  • 12 places for people from financially and socially disadvantaged backgrounds,
  • 10 places for Veterans
  • 20 high care places including 4 high care respite places.

In identifying the aged care needs in the region we have consulted widely with the relevant community groups as well as other service providers (both aged and health care). The level of support for the facility has been overwhelming and consequently our brokerage and partnership arrangements are extensive and include strong relationships with:

  • North Coast Area Health Service,
  • (Psycho)Geriatricians,
  • Local public and private hospitals & allied health specialists
  • Dementia-specific support and training organisations (e.g. Dementia Care Australia)
  • Community leaders (both political and those representing ethnic/cultural groups)

Due to our strong community links, we will be able to provide a continuum of care from low to high care in a structured, culturally appropriate way with relevantly trained staff (with a particular focus on dementia care) and above average staffing ratios.

The Suffolk Park Residential Aged Care proposal involves constructing a modern and operationally efficient facility with a total of 80 fully appointed single low and high care suites. The development will include 4 wings off a central hub of two-storeys. Each room will be with a single bed and private ensuite attached. There will be provision for a carer to stay in the Carer?s Room in the south-eastern wing. Each room will have high quality fittings and d?cor. The facility will be fully sprinklered and the rooms will be fitted with safety devices such as light, door and motion sensors allowing for safe movement of residents (i.e. ?smart? rooms).

The western wing of the ground floor will be dedicated to 20 dementia care places (both high and low) with a Snoezelen room and large outdoor secure area.  The Suffolk Park Residential Aged Care complex will have recreational and therapy facilities including;

  • Sundecks/balconies
  • Library/theatrette
  • Hairdressing and beauty salon.

There will also be provision for visiting elderly relatives and friends, as well as consulting rooms for regularly attending physicians and allied health specialists. Other special focuses will include rehabilitation (with a dedicated therapy centre, gynasium and hydro-therapy pool) and palliative care. Staff and contracted services will include significant primary and allied health services.

Each floors’ private lounges and restaurant-like dining facilities will be designed to encourage friends and relatives to join the residents as much as possible. Other features of Suffolk Park Residential Aged Care will include modern staff facilities, substantial parking for staff and visitors (approx. 18 vehicle places) and very high quality furnishing and fittings throughout. There will also be a courtesy bus run by the facility for the use of residents and their family (including a complimentary weekly service to collect and bring relatives to visit the residents). The buildings will incorporate energy and water saving design, in keeping with current best practice principles and to ensure value for money for both care recipients and the Commonwealth.
